Rajery

Rajery is an exceptional man and musician. Despite his handicap —an amputated right hand— and thanks to his determination, he has become of one the virtuosos of the valiha tubular bamboo zither which is the emblematic instrument of Madagascar. He has managed to forge a unique style, unclutted, refined and poetical. He is also a writer, composer and interpreter of great talent. His art nurtures on the various Malagasy traditions. His songs tell of the bush fires that ravage the primal forest, the zebu thieves, the daily life, fears and hopes of the Malagasy people. Whilst the framework of his music seems to be limited to the geographical outlines of the Great Island, the emotion arising from his songs and his interpretation is truly universal.

His new album, Sofera, was recorded on the occasion of his performance at the 31st "Musiques Metisses" Festival in Angoulême, with his new band of young musicians. 13 new songs present the richness of the Malagasy music heritage: the heady rhythms of trance dances, the fervour of salegy, the melodic blues of the High Plateaux and a cappella polyphony. Luminous and full of the beauty of his land, his songs invite listeners to a poetical reverie when their refreshing swing doesn't drive them to dance.
